Discover Sustainability
Our remote location, agricultural economy and well-publicised rejection of nuclear power earned New Zealand a 'clean, green' reputation and the wine industry is at the forefront of the country's sustainability movement. Our world-leading initiative, Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ), promotes best practise in water usage, energy consumption, waste management and biodiversity.
Over 95% of vineyard area and over 90% of New Zealand's wine production capacity is operating under an independently audited sustainability programme. The industry goal is for 100% of our wine to be produced under SWNZ or other accredited sustainable, organic or bio-dynamic programmes by 2012.
The New Zealand wine industry is committed to preserving the unique places that make our wines famous, aiming to be 100% Sustaibable by 2012.
Discover Diversity
New Zealand's expansive coastline enables us to succeed with a range of diverse varieties and styles. Wine-growing regions extend 1600km (1000 miles), from the sub-tropical north to the mountainous south. The maritime climate (nowhere is more than 130km, or 80 miles, inland) enhances the fruit-driven intensity for which our wines are renowned.
There are a number of distinct major winegrowing regions spread throughout New Zealand. Within these diverse regions, sub-regional characteristics are beginning to show through and wines are now being distinguished as being not just from a wine region, but from a sub-region and a place.
